quiet holidays

hello my friends. i think this december i will be playing a lot less than i usually do. but that is okay because any shows i play will be special ones. for instance, i'm playing with the novemberists at cape stage's final acoustic blitzen! i'm also going to be playing with "BAR none" a group consisting of me, my biostats professor (and wonderful musical thespian) bob bailey, and the other conrad wakowski, ron newcombe.

there are a few things that i want you to attend. it's really important to me that the amazingly talented young people in my community have an opportunity to play shows the way me and my friends did when we were young. to that end, my friend joel and i have been organizing some all ages shows from time to time. one such show is coming up, in conjunction with the cape breton regional library. this time it is a coffee house december 5.

as for the other thing, i just have to ask... are you stoked?

gobble gobble

it's that time of year again. the time when everyone gets together. you see your family and friends from far away. that's right, it's gobblefest!

here are just some of the shows that are happening:

be sure to check out for a full listing of shows and venues. i'm so excited to be playing both all ages offerings this year, and to have been part of making this event happen.

old times and new times

the rock ranger show was pretty exceptional. it brought back many memories and there were sad feelings mixed in with happy ones. it was truly bittersweet for me, because when i was younger, i looked up to those guys so much. i would have given my right arm to play a song with rock ranger. and then i got to do it, but only after jay was gone. harry recorded the whole thing, you can watch it below.

on a personal note of dissatisfaction: you may notice in the video that for the first half of the show, a dude was taking photos right in the face of the band members. i'm not against taking show photos, but this guy was super disruptive and blocking the crowd's view of the band, not just for a song or two, but for a full half of the band's setlist.

please, photographers, be considerate of the crowd that came to see the band play. you are not the only person at the show. especially when the show is a very emotional moment that involves cathartic release for people who have lost a friend. if you are a good photographer, you don't need to take one thousand photos to get good shots, or you can probably get some good shots using methods that don't ruin the show for everyone else. i personally was super distracted by this guy jostling me and standing in front of me with a giant camera (AND ignoring my requests to, uh, not do those things) that it really almost ruined an important event for me. so yeah, don't be a selfish jerk. that's my public service announcement for the day.

rainy days revisited

this summer has been so full. full of swimming, and boats, and gardens and little woodland creatures. in between my summer revelry, i've managed to record a few things, and i'm putting them here for you to listen to.

first, i recently celebrated with two dear friends of mine as they got married. for the occasion, i wrote them a song called "like a kite" which you can download here. it features morgan currie on the fiddle.

second, i was asked to record a cover of a mike o'neill song for an upcoming tribute album. this was very exciting because mike is one of my very favorite artists of all time. it comes with a little story: back in the day i was watching "much east", and i believe they were having a "wake" for the inbreds, as they recently decided to disband. mike was talking about his next project, and said he would be making a demo, and if people wanted to hear it he'd send them a cassette for 7 or 8 dollars or something. so of course i wrote in to perimeter records and requested one, and one of my favorite songs on it was a b-side called in the back of my mind which never made it onto a mike o'neill record. so here is my version of it.

finally, that lovely wedding i went to made me feel a bit croony, so i recorded a few oldies on the baritone uke that i learned for the event. enjoy!

i don't really have much to say today but i wanted to draw your attention to the june 7th show with static in action. that's because we're going to be debuting some new songs that are guaranteed to knock your socks off.

also, on a personal note i have a degree in biology now! yay. i've got a super sweet research job for the summer and i'll be offering some music lessons starting soon. i'll make a post about that soon with more details.
